As with prior Fulbright awards, this experience has permitted wonderful development of new skills, knowledge, collaborations, and continuing professional relationships for which I remain very grateful. I was responsible for 4 courses at the School of Public Health. I believe that I have been able to make significant contributions at SNU and with community-based organizations. My contacts and knowledgeability already have been helpful for my professional activities and productivity in the United States. The opportunity to develop professional relationships, friendships, cultural awareness, and language skills has led to personal growth and gratification as well as improved capacity to contribute to others.

As a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer, I taught American business law courses to incredibly smart, diligent students from many countries: Korea, China, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Singapore, and America. In these students, I saw a bright multinational future. The Fulbright also allowed me to study Korean corporate law. It provided an invaluable chance to talk to expert colleagues at Yonsei and to observe firsthand how Korean corporate law and economic enterprise work. This combined experience shaped my thoughts and perspective, and upon my return to the U.S. I published my analysis of Korean corporate law.

My Fulbright experience was of tremendous value, as I was able to conduct original research about gender, work and family issues, submit findings for publication, network with other scholars and universities, and contribute to public policy debates. I was able to give over ten presentations at various universities in South Korea and also received support to present my research and collaborate with colleagues in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia, countries which also are struggling with similar challenges related to work and family issues for women. I was honored to serve as an evaluator for junior scholars applying for the Fulbright. I contributed as a publicly engaged scholar by writing four op-eds for the Korea Times and giving talks for groups such as the Royal Asiatic Society and Korea Foundation. On a personal level, as a second-generation Korean American, I was able to understand my own family’s migration history more fully, and to share this experience with my own family.
