Beginning in PY2001, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State announced the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program in order to extend the scope and reach of the traditional program in a new era. The primary goals of this program are to advance mutual understanding, establish long-term cooperation and create opportunities for institutional linkages.
The Fulbright Senior Specialist Program will provide U.S. scholars and professionals short term grants of two to six weeks. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) will maintain a roster of specialist candidates in a variety of fields and match the candidate when a named scholar or a certain field is requested by the potential host institution in a foreign country through the Fulbright commission.

Grants awarded will include travel, a $200 per day honorarium, plus per diem. Costs will be shared by the Department of State and the host institution. The Department of State will cover international travel and the honorarium. Per diem costs, which are in-country costs for lodging, meals & in-country transportation, will be covered by the host institution.
